With all the sun and not much rain, don’t cut the grass too short. It will be healthier for leaving a little longer and we will soon be into wet times.
If you doing a lot of deadheading of roses and lupins and all the other plants that make the borders look untidy, just chuck the bits on the lawn and then run the mower over them – it will chew them up, spit them into the grass box, as well as opening up the mowings in the compost heap making it break down more quickly.
Soft fruits ripen so quickly, it’s a job to keep up with the picking! If I have a surplus I pop it in the freezer. If I have time I make jam, just the job for the winter lunch to remind me of summer sunshine! I tend to forget the spines on the gooseberries and tayberries! If the runner beans look a bit miserable, try some lime along the row. A handful in a watering can will often help unlock other nutrients for the plants
to absorb.
Tomatoes in the greenhouse like lots of feed. If you use a seaweed-based feed they generally look okay. Sometimes with other feeds they get magnesium deficiency so a tablespoon of Epsom Salts
will help.
Don’t forget the basket and container competition for our forthcoming Summer Show. You can enter twice for each category but we judge this a week earlier – you need to let me know if you want yours to be considered. The committee will then pay you a visit on the morning of Saturday 8 August (you don’t need to be in as long as you mark which ones you’re entering) and the results will be announced at the Show on the 15th along with the other categories. I hope you are encouraged to take part or at least come and sample some of our tea and cake!
This year promises to be a little different with the Wychavon Roadshow providing some free activities for all the family to enjoy so lets keep our fingers crossed for a cracking day!
